Racing for Reggie

By CLIVE GOOZEE

The sons of former Daily Express sub-editor Reg Cooper have hit the road in his honour.

Nic and Tim, pictured above, took part in l'eroica, a gruelling ride through Tuscany.

The team, named Racing Reggie 'in tribute to the old man', were on pre-1987 machines riding through the Tuscan Hills on chalk roads.

"It turned out to be one of the toughest physical challenges I’ve undertaken," said Nic, whose gears broke after 10km. "I had to cycle the remaining 65km in a fixed low gear, taking on some brutal climbs on the unmade Bianchi strada roads that weave through the vineyards.

The Cooper boys were sustained by the thought of a few bottles of Chianti at the finish. Now Nic is  considering doing the UK version of l'eroica in Derbyshire in June.

Reg Cooper, who worked in News and Sport on the Express, died in October 2007.
